Roland MC-50 error

Post by sweet-mountain-24 »

I think I'm having trouble with the disk image for the Roland MC-50 sequencer.

Can anyone share a known-good HFE file?

Current state: Gotek is installed in the device. It says "hXc" on its LED segment display on startup. I name my disk images DSKA0001.HFE, DSKA0000.HFE, .... The Gotek file selector buttons work, so if I have DSKA0000 and -0001 on the USB drive the Gotek will allow me to select 000 or 001 but not 002. Still, any attempt to use the MC-50's disk Initialize function fails with the error Attn No Disk.

Things I've tried: mc50_shugart image from another thread, RolandMC-50_EmptyDisk.img from another thread, and one I created using the Linux mkdosfs command. For the *.img files, I use the HxC FloppyEmulator tool to create the *.hfe files. I've tried setting the System Family and Interface Mode on the Gotek...neither the "Generic Shugart DD" or the "S950 DD" settings found on https://hxc2001.com/docs/gotek-floppy-e ... tings.html make any difference. Tried two different brands of USB stick.

Any help GREATLY appreciated.

Working now!!

I moved a jumper on to S0. Now, the green light on the Gotek is on. I think this should be added to a Troubleshooting page: if the green light isn't on, you probably have a jumper problem.

Settings: a jumper on S0, setting 0 - 19 (Roland), 1-08 (Generic Shugart), 4-02 (indexed mode)

I used the mc50_shugart file in another thread, opening it in HxC Floppy Emulator and saving the HFE file. I renamed it to DSKA0000.HFE and put it on the USB stick.

I know this is going to sound stupid but I've spent a long time searching around and I really can't find the answer.

I have a Roland MC50 with the 720k gotek installed. This was done by someone else...I bought it unknowing...I thought it still had a floppy drive in it.

Anyway, the gotek works...initialized a usb stick, saves, loads all just fine. The only thing is I am completely clueless as to how to see it on my windows 10 pc. I have the hxc software I have the blank image files...just no idea how to actually do it. Please could someone point me in the right direction.

I want to be able to move images around for backups etc. Sorry for my stupidity.

Hello,

Have you the hxc firmware installed on your gotek ?
If not, the starting point is : https://hxc2001.com/store/getlic.html

This is going to sound a bit stupid too....I haven't personally but as I bought the unit from someone who had installed it, I kind of guessed they had done it. Is there any way of checking or do I just go ahead and try it anyway?

Again...sorry for the stupid response!

It has a two digit red LED display. It says '00' whatever I do with it. Saving, loading, whatever. Does that help at all?

The display is still "00". The only thing I can see that changes is that the green light comes on when it is saving or loading a song.

Edit: Sorry...I misread your post. If I start with the USB in or out, put the USB in when it is on, or take it out, the display still says "00"!

Ok this means that you don't have any bootloader installed on this unit. You need to use an usb a usb a cable or serial ttl cable to install the firmware :

Thank you so much for your help. I'll try this with a USB type A to type A cable and see how it goes!
