If you want to test others firmwares, well i generally don't support this, but i may later fork them and provide binaries compatible with the HxC firmware bootloader. This way you can swap/change the firmwares as you want. i have done this long time ago - but this was a manual work for me. I will try to script this to provide automatically update when a new firmware is released.
(Anyway so far the HxC firmware is well ahead of all others gotek firmwares regarding the Apple II support, so this third party distribution feature is not a priority work for the moment.)

Regarding the exchange.bin file, it is indeed only valid for one flash.
Great, that answers all of my questions about it. Thank you!

Another question about this latest firmware update: Are the disk images writable, or are they read only? I tried to copy a small file to the disk image that was mounted in the Gotek, but I got a File Not Found error. When I cataloged the disk, it didn't show up.

COPY II PLUS 8.4, doing a file copy from the \RAM disk to the ProDos System Disk in the Gotek.

Thanks

The HFE are writable for sure (tested again yesterday on all Gotek variants available on the apple IIc i have here).
