Read Fail Problem with SD HxC - Please Help!

Post by AndyGarton »

Hi all,

I've tried endlessly to fix this problem without success, different cables, SD cards, formatting cards in a different way, config file settings etc, and I simply can't get past this error. My latest setup is with the HxC connected internally (the internal floppy drive previously installed did work ok), using "ready made" CPC cables bought from eBay. The eBay seller has been very helpful, including testing and exchanging cables, so I'm as certain as I can be that these are ok.

Pics attached of my setup, any help massively appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy

For sure and without any hesitation : the cable floppy is not connected to the right way at the hxc side:
Reconnect it to the other way !

Thanks, but it won't connect the other way due to the notch on the connector. It's a CPC specific cable which has been tested this way by the seller.

Ok so I cut the notch off just to make sure and the cat command just hangs then, the HxC does nothing. With the cable the "correct" way round the HxC does make the drive noise and the track display updates, but it always fails with a read failure.

Move the jumper to the ID0-A position.

I then just get "disc missing" - it only "works" (makes the HxC do something, albeit with the read fail error) in the ID3/A position.

My mistake : The floppy cable inversion wasn't at the hxc side, but into the CPC.
Reconnect the floppy cable as in your picture and inverse the internal connection.

I appreciate the continued help - unfortunately that didn't work either, it's back to the cat command hanging.

ID3/A, as in the picture above. Any other jumper position results in a disc missing error.

I don't unfortunately. This specific cable was tested by the seller (I sent the first one back and he confirmed that one was ok too).

Because he's spent a lot of time helping me already and as all indications point to an issue with the HxC itself I was hoping to get some help here now.
