LBA Change Test Failed ! Write Issue ?

Post by oguzog »

I have an external floppy cable (made using these links)

http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=26656
https://lazyretroist.wordpress.com/2016 ... ppy-cable/

I have a gotek and hxc firmware (HXCFEUSB_V3_1_22_2a)

Using ATARI ST config file and autoboot file selector.

I always get LBA Change Test Failed ! Write Issue ?

Any suggestions?

Floppy ribbon is fine.
Gotek is fine (works fine as internal).
When i boot with latest firmware i see 000 on screen, boots up firmware but error message appears "LBA Change Test Failed ! Write Issue ?"

I know it is not related to you but is This can be caused by W101 W102 jumpers etc?

Maybe. Would be nice to test the normal write on an image.

Take any HFE DD Image with a FAT12 partition and rename it AUTOBOOT.HFE ;)

Wanna make sure if i understand correctly. I will rename any game image (first convert it from .st to .hfe) and rename it autoboot.hfe. See if game works or not. And tey to save a game for example?

For write test... should i create blank .st image and convert it to hfe and rename it autoboot.hfe and boot from atari floppy internal drive with disk (any copy software) and copy from a to b?

OK.

Here's what i have tried;

1-) Convert couple of games to HFE and rename them as AUTOBOOT.HFE.

They work great.

2-) Convert Deluxe Paint first disk to HFE rename it as AUTOBOOT.HFE

It worked great. Then i draw something with my (un)talented hands. (I Drew my hero). And saved it to same image. And tried to load again.

All worked great.

Also put the usb back to my computer and convert hfe so st again. Run that image from emulator and load the image i just saved. And this is it;

Image

But still cannot make autoboot.hfe (real hxc manager) work. Always says "LBA Change Test Failed ! Write Issue ?" and stucks there.

Well i have checked the pins connections description on the Atari forum thread, and this appears be wrong to me : It currently use the motor on signal while it should use DS1 (B:) or DS0 (A:).

HxC pin 10 should be connected to Drive Sel B pin 6 or Drive Sel A pin 5

Sure about that? even Atari wiki site (it is closed now but we can check through archive.org) says same pinouts

http://web.archive.org/web/201409292323 ... ngle_cable

And isn't it abnormal to play any game and software just changing image name to autoboot.hfe but not autoboot.hfe itself.

Yes sure. Rely on the Motor On signal as drive select signal is definitively an error.

If you have an Atari STf or STe with internal floppy drive, then by default, the external drive is drive B:. You should use drive select on pin 5 (DS1) of the external FDD connector. If you have the internal FDD, then the signal on pin 6 is always high (never active). By default external floppy (ie. SF-314) is internally set to FD0, so DS0 line of the FDD signal is connected to pin 5 of external FDD connector. Atari does not have a separate Motor ON signal for each drive. As far as I know, the autoboot loader will work only from drive A:. If you wish to use GOTEK as drive B: in ST, you have to either add OLED display to select image directly, or use indexed mode. You may reroute the signal so you'd have DS0 on pin 5, but in any case, GOTEK should be set as Drive A (FD0), and internal floppy either disconnected or set to be FD1.

That makes sense :) thanks.

I have ste by the way.

Do you think any way to solve that problem by changing w300 and w301 jumpers?

Partially - you should change W301 so you'd have DS0 signal routed to pin 5, instead of DS1. In the same time you should switch jumper on the internal FDD to set it to be FD1. Alternatively you could swap DS0 and DS1 signals on the motherboard, but it requires cutting tracks, which I don't like.
