HxC Rev C & internal Floppy at the same time in A500

Post by drwhy »

Hi !

I´m trying to get my internal floppy drive & HxC to run at the same time in my A500.
The internal drive should be DF0 & the HxC DF1+DF2.
During my research for this i found a post about in this forum:
http://torlus.com/floppy/forum/viewtopi ... =26&t=1147

But for some reason i did not get this to work ! (i don´t know where to solder the extracted
cable from the fdd ribbon exactly)
Is there anyone out there who did the same in the past and can give me some
instructions or a detailed tutorial how to do this ?

greetings & thank you from austria !

So OK ...

After some days of testing and research i found it by myself.

Before i explain, i have to say that i am a totally newbie in reading and soldering of electrical circuits ;-).
Also a BIG "thank you" goes out to „LOTHAREK“ for this exciting floppy emulator
and to „MCCNEX“ who did this little hack a year before !

Basically it is very easy to get the internal floppy drive as df0: and the HxC as df1: & df2:.
The only thing you have to do is to count out the 14th cable (Pin-Nr 7!) from the right to the left of your „non-twisted“ floppy ribbon.
Cut it out from the ribbon, extend it with a sigle cable and solder it to Pin-Nr 9 (the 4th from right to left)
of your external floppy connector.

On your Amiga 500´s motherboard you can find a single solder point numbered „614“.
I think soldering the cable there should give the same result,
but i haven´t tested this yet !

Voila, you’ve got now internal floppy as df0: and HxC as df1: & df2:.
(don´t forget to set the jumpers for df1 & df2 on your hxc-emulator !)

Some problems now coming up:

As we all know Amigas kick-rom 1.3 is only able to boot from df0:.
The simplest solution for this is changing the kick-rom to 2.04 or making a builded in
bootselector by soldering a SEL/0/1/2 switch into the Amiga to power down the internal floppy and
change the jumper settings to switch of the internal drive and change the jumper settings for HxC as df0 & df1 like „MCCNEX“ did it.
This is a very important step, because i´ve noticed that my HxC is crashing when i want to change
HxC´s autoboot-file because the emulator is searching only on df0: for the file and did not find it there !!
(I haven´t done this, because i´m on kick 2.04 and have ordered my switch just today, so i have to wait till i get it)

At this point i have a question to „lotharek“:
Is there already a work-around for this ? or is it possible to tell the emulator that it should search
for the configfile in every connected drive ?
Maybe in a future firmware version ?

This would be a awesome feature!

So far so good, i hope this helps some other People to get some fresh air to their Amigas.
And just one more thing:
I wrote this little tutorial because i have searched the web a long time for this and the only post i found for this
was the post from MCCNEX one year ago.

Cheerz !

but this should already work with the latest autoboot software:

ah ...
thank you for answering Jeff.

sorry i see i´ve explained this issue a little bit wrong.

when i set the emulator to df1: & df2: sure it loads the autoboot.hfe file
but it does not recognize the firmware of the emulator!
and so it hangs up with only showing ver. 1.10a but not the firmware version
and i am not able to select any menus (F3 or help, etc)

the only shortcut that works at this state is "ctrl, left A & right A"

this happens with both firmware versions V1.8.6.13a & V1.8.2.40
after disconnecting the internal floppy and setting the emulator to df0: & df1: it works normal !!

any ideas what could cause this problems ?

Is the drive HxC switching to the direct access mode ?
What is displayed on the LCD ?
