New to HxC and am having trouble understanding a couple things

Post by chasingamovingtrain »

Hi! sorry if this is redundant (it probably is) but the manual didnt make much sense to me and im finding it pretty important now that i get the hang on this hxc stuff.

I bought a SP1200 with a SD already formatted with 50 blanks and now im trying to (on mac)

1. load sounds on to the blanks or somewhere on the SD just have some kits ready to use on the SP (super important for me)
2. if i have used one of the blanks - getting sounds i sampled in back onto my computer (not as important considering i can just record them off)

can anyone help me with this or point me in the right direction?

thanks so much

Ok no problem :D :

Each "HFE" files on the SDCard is a floppy disk image. Each image/floppy disk can contains ~560 KB of data on the SP1200.
So you need to select an HFE on the hxc emulator ( this is like inserting a floppy disk in the drive) and then you can read/write data from the machine/SP1200.

Now you to read/save something from/to the floppy disk on this particular machine is another subject. I never touched this machine so i can't tell exactly how it works but maybe these videos can help :

The machine appears to read the whole disk at power up.

You can find SP1200 HFE in this archive :

Ok thanks so much for the help! so i put the sp1200 HFE's on the sd card and in the hxc software loaded the "floppy file image" and it seems to have loaded but im not sure how to now put sounds on it? attaching a photo to show how it looks.

and wow - only 560KB?? how on earth did people put kits on floppys? or did they just sample everything in and build kits that way? im looking at my sounds and most of them are around 300kb so it doesnt really seem possible to even get a group of sounds on a floppy image. maybe im misunderstanding how these were used.

Copy some SP1200 HFE file to the sdcard, insert the sdcard into the emulator.

So

since i had bought the sp and hxc off someone else with an sd card already set up i wondered if it was formatted on windows and thats where i was having issues.

So i formatted a new SD to be fat32
put an indexed .CFG file at the root
updated to the newest firmware (which i think worked)
Put the .HFE files that you told me to put on the SD on it

Everything works. The issue i am still having is that

When i load the .HFE files i downloaded into the software, i get that file error.
If i try and create a new disk image, it seems to work but when that file goes on the SP, the SP cant read it.
the file system type im creating with is the default which is 3"5 720KB DSDD FAT12. that could be where im going wrong but i just dont understand that part and left it alone.

It seems like an issue specifically with the HXC software either the firmware is too new for these files or i dont have the settings right.

I also have the HFE File Interfacemode settings to auto which picked Emu Shugart. I also left this alone because since the SP is emu it seems correct to me.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks so much

SP1200 doesn't use the DOS / Standard floppy format, that's why you can't edit/add files to the image with the hxc tool.
What do you want to do ? import or export samples ?
