Simple how to on EPS Classic with HXC gotek

Post by djangomagic »

Hi there,

So I've got an EPS Classic, a gotek that has been flashed with HXC. The Hxc symbol appears when turned on. The guides are really ambiguous as to how to get a boot file to work, let alone sounds to work. So I've put the config file for indexed mode onto the usb. I have an OS File here downloaded from chicken sys site that I've tried renaming to DSKA0001.EFE, I can't get the drive to respond to anything, it just sits there saying HXC. How do I get this to recognize a startup disk file and how do I get the software to work properly, I've installed the correct ftdi drivers and the software in emulator settings just says emulator not detected! why would it need to be plugged into the emulator? isn't the idea to create an image that is like a floppy image and be able to load an OS or sound file into that image, export/save image and put on USB? the instructions are really unclear on how to simply get emulators to read files via the software.

Thanks for any help, it's greatly needed,

Django

Use the HFE files for EPS present into this archive (inside the SDHxCFE_Ensoniq_EPS.zip file) :

https://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_driv ... Images.zip

rename the selected files DSKA0000.HFE,DSKA0001.HFE,DSKA0002.HFE,...

And use the indexed CFG file present into the Gotek HxC firmware archive.

also when I try and drop the OS file into the floppy emulator software I get 'Load error! Read file error!'

EDIT* Thank you for the fast reply, I will try these steps

Ok so to clarify the steps I took;

Re-formatted to FAT32;

I renamed all the files inside the SDHxCFE_Ensoniq_EPS.zip file to DSKA0000.HFE, DSKA0002.HFE and so on for each file;

I also Put the indexed CFG file from floppy disk images onto the disk,

So the LCD now shows 000 and I can scan through the files numerically. The EPS display still flashes, please insert disk. I have been slowly scanning through the numbered files while the EPS displays please insert disk.

Is this the idea? to scan through until the proper OS disk number is reached?

or is there a way to select one of these files to get the EPS to attempt to load the OS from a particular file.

Thank you for your help so far, it's greatly appreciated,
Django

"000" Is fine : The DSKA0000.HFE is loaded.
Is the green LED always lit ?
Is the jumper set to S0 ?

Ok great,

No the green LED is not lit,

I was unaware of a jumper change?

Then move the jumper to S0.

Sorry but can you clarify what's needed here a bit better for me,

Do you mean the jumper that was in place to set the gotek into programming mode?

All programming wires used for flashing have been removed

No : I mean the drive id setting jumper : this is printed on the gotek pcb. there is S0, S1 and MO position. For EPS it must be at S0.

Fantastic, everything is working as it should! I really appreciate your help here Jeff, very kind.

One more thing I'd like to clarify is, I want to create a simple workflow so can I use an example of getting a WAV file, converted to .EFE for the Emulator. I obviously have no idea what the purpose would be for the Hxc software to create these files. Isn't there a few applications out there that do this?

What would be your method?

Some softwares are maybe able to do this job, but i am not a specialist to make a proper advice.

anyway this seems to be a good candidate :

Fantastic,

I had just came across the same thing, apologies if this question came across as another needy person wanting it all done for them :)

Just to add to this post for anyone wanting to convert their instrument or otherwise that's having any concerns;

I'm by no means able to code and this is the first time I've ever flashed anything with a bootloader. I Tried to use an Arduino UNO board at first that I got from Jaycar... It's not possible unless yours has a proper FTDI FT232RL chip onboard, their serial converter is usually a chinese knock off of a different model chip. The process is really quite simple by following certain videos on youtube on where to do the jumper connections etc. (and the mentioned S0 jumper change don't forget!)

I went to see a very kind and new friend to get him to see if the UNO would work (it should have theoretically..) and saw a very small part of the parts and process that goes into creating and coding these things to work in this area. I've got a whole new level of respect for anyone that can create anything like this and still put up with people like myself that are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks very much to you Jeff (Jean-francois I presume?) It's greatly appreciated what you've done for us humans to be able to revive some fantastic old hardware :)

Time to make some music!

Cheers and all the best,
Django
