Weird behavior on my hxc revision f

Post by Linn Solaris »

Hello,

I'm using a rev F on my emulator II and it works fine but from time to time it is stuck with both left red lights on and a continuous bippppppp at start up.
After few tweaks (switch on /off) or pushing the middle switch I come back to normal operations.
Any explanations or checks I have to do ?

Thank you for you support !

This is a power supply issue.
Check the floppy power connection to the floppy emulator.

Also the emulator II are also well know to have power supply problems. Can you check the voltage at start up ?

Thank you Jeff for your feedback. Some precisions maybe to identify potential issue (if not the power supply):
- emu Eii always boots fine
- it can always load the floppy disk (from the first drive)
- one this issue disappears with few tweaks on the HxC I can load during several hours disk images

I'm not able to check power supply by myself but maybe can ask a friend in few weeks who has more experience and tools to support me.
So according to the 3 points above it could still be the power supply ?
All the best and thank you ,

I will make a short video this weekend so you can see it if it helps (who knows)

Yes : You have this behavior because the power supply voltage is too low for some reasons. The HxC is kept in reset state if the voltage is under 4.5V.
Why the voltage is under this value ? Possibles reasons :
- A bad contact at the floppy emulator power connector. In this case please reconnect it.
- An old power supply with a low voltage when it is cold. In this case you need to service it and replace chemical capacitors.

I have changed something about this "old EII issue" into the firmware some years ago. Which firmware version have you ?

Very interesting! Thank you. My studio is indeed colder than usual these days (between 16 and 17 celcius degrees)

Running this version: 1.8.2.40 LAFC9

Add-on: capacitors and power supply changed few years ago

you can also try the latest firmware, but i don't think that this will correct this issue :

hello Jeff !
I was able to make it work by reconnecting power connectors on the Hxc. It worked well after and I decided to update software but have now this screen:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8dmweu4v3vbcq ... 2.jpg?dl=0

I've used a formated sd card (fat32 as specified on the manual) put the unzipped file HXCFE (or should keep the file compressed ?)

any suggestion greatly appreciated ;-)

Solution found with this video : http://youtu.be/7XUwg-7sDY4

Update file has no "upd" extension when extracted.
So for the record my issue was:
- a potential bad connection with the HxC power connection from my emu (solved by unplugging and plugging it again)
- the update file had not the right extension and I renamed it -;)

Some good learnings here,
Back to music then !
Thank you for the the video Jeff !
