Slim SD HxC Emulator for Tektronix TDS oscilloscope

Post by dfrie »

Hi,
sadly my recently purchased Slim SD HxC Emulator is not willing to cooperate.
It is intended to replace the original TEAC FD-05HG.
Problem is that I can neither read nor write.
DIP-Switches of the emulator are set to 1010 0000.

I have tried the 1.44MB files from the quick install, and others as well. No way.

With indexed I mostly get error message "file system media missing" from the scope,
with non-indexed mode I get "media not compatible".

Please help.

cheers, dfrie

You probably need to add a 1Kohms resistor at the R8 place on the emulator.

Jeff,

thank you very much for your quick response. I have inserted a pullup resistor (according to schematics
this would be in parallel with R8) on the floppy_data line. However, there is no change; the problem remains.
There is also no difference by file interface mode (tried IBM PC 720KB and IBM PC 1.44MB).
Tried 720K and 1.44MB formats (Disk browser, File system type, Create Disk, Save/Export); no difference.
The error is either "file system media missing" or "media not compatible".

What should I try next?

cheers, dfrie

Thank you, email sent.

BTW, I noticed that R31 was missing as well. Fixed that, but the issue remains.

To Jeff and to whom it might concern, some additions to my previous post:

Today I continued work on the floppy emulator. First, I noticed that R31 is not required if U6 is a fixed voltage regulator (ref. BOM).
To resolve the issue of potentially missing pullups, I have 1K pullups now on the following output lines:
FLOPPY_DSKCHG (CON1 pin 2)
FLOPPY_INDEX (CON1 pin 8)
FLOPPY_TRK0 (CON1 pin 26)
FLOPPY_WPT (CON1 pin 28)
FLOPPY_DATA (CON1 pin 30)
FLOPPY_READY (CON1 pin 34)
NB: all input lines have pull-ups by design of the emulator card.

I formatted a floppy disk with the TDS scope and used the emulator software "floppy disk dump feature" to produce a .hfe file. With that I created SD-Card configurations using the IBM PC 1.44MB interface mode. However, for both indexed and non-indexed mode the issue remains, w/o change of the TDS error indication already described.
IMHO this points towards a hardware problem.

cheers, Dieter

Hi,

I'm planning to replace a floppy disk in an Agilent/HP scope. So it would be nice to know what has to be done/changed to make this device work in the Tek scope. Maybe I stumble across the same problems.

Regards
Andreas

Here it is :
Hello Jeff,

it is working now. Thank you very very much!

The working configuration is:
R8 (1K) inserted, new firmware, 1st image of the archive you sent me
(the other 2 images do not work).

There are a lot of Tektronix TDS scopes with (more or less useless)
floppy drives, so I hope you
have a lot of new customers now.
If you like, I can post this success story on the tek support forum.

cheers, Dieter
So a 1Kohm pull-up resistor must be placed at the R8 position on the Slim HxC, and the Density signal polarity is inverted versus the PC interface (simple software setting).

Attached the working image & setup.

Hi,
we are new in this forum, so sorry for our questions. As dfrie we have some problems...

Sadly our recently purchased Slim SD HxC Emulator is not willing to cooperate.
It is intended to replace the original TEAC FD-04HF 2301-U in our TDS 754C.
Problem is that I can neither read nor write.
We added a 1Kohms resistor at the R8 place on the emulator, as Jeff told us in the forum some years ago. No way.
After trying some configurations (HXCSDFE.CFG) we removed it - no way.

DIP-Switches of the emulator are set to 1010 0000 or 0010 0000 or 1000 0000. If the DIP-Switches are like the PC-compatible-mode (0110 0000), the emulator isn't recognized by the oszilloscope.

We have tried the 1.44MB files from the quick install, and others as well (like told us in the forum). No way.

With indexed I mostly get error message "file system media missing" from the scope,
with non-indexed mode I get "media not compatible".

So we received some error massages - see the pictures.

Thank you for your help, HSA_TUM

Thank you Jeff!
For those who have similar problems - information: we get some firmware-update, .cfg files form jeff, the swich 1111000 without a 1 kohms resistor!
Now it works!
Heartfelt thanks!

Hello I have just purchased this and I am having similar problems on my TDS 3012.

I have the switches set to 11110000, 4GB SD card formatted to FAT32, allocation size = default, HXCSDFE.CFG copied from Textronix_TDS.zip to SD card.

When I try to save to file on the scope, it gives the "Floppy disk is not compatible or unformatted" error. The red floppy simulator light flashes continuously.

Have I missed something?

Regards John Cottier.

Try this firmware update :
https://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_driv ... rmware.zip

And place 1ko resistor to the R8 position.
