Got drive - Still Uncertain about cable

Post by Mikorians »

The drive is still sitting here with an upside-down slot-
I posted a picture explaining my problem.
The teeth on your ZIF/FFC socket are on the top.
The Citizen W1D has the teeth on the bottom.
Some conversion is REQUIRED. I cannot solder
Plastic strips.
It's so close!

Suggestions for deployment would now be appreciated.
I don't know the field like you do.

I have no personal experience of these FFC/FPC cables but not all cables are the same.
I checked out WIKI ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexible_flat_cable ) where it is explained as follows......

"Some cables (described as Type 1 by Wurth Electronik or Type A by Molex) have the exposed contacts on the same side at each end. Other cables (labelled Type 2 or Type D) have the exposed contacts on opposite sides of the cable (so that if the cable is lying flat, one end will have face-up contacts, and the other end will have face-down contacts)."

Maybe you need an alternate cable ?

(Examples of both types of cable can be seen here ... http://uk.mouser.com/Wire-Cable/FFC-FPC ... /_/N-ad930)

If there were an extension cable with pins on either the botton or both sides of the socket and
The contacts on top, that would work.
The other end of my cable goes to the factory bonded laptop plug.

Couple of wild ideas...

1. Could the end of the ribbon be folded over, and double thickness inserted into the emulator connector?

2. Obtain a short ribbon with connection on opposite sides, and a loose zif socket. Put your cable and one end of new cable into zif bare connectors together so that the socket merely clamps the two cables together. Or devise an alternative way of clamping ribbon cables together

It's a good thing I had 3 of these rare proprietary compaq connectors because I had already tried folding and the tin snapped neatly.
I don't have many left to spare here.
A bit more research might be more helpful at this point... :(
I have a couple of leads myself, but actual coupler and cable that will
Actually fit would help.
It's strange that the ZIF drive is sold, but no adapters for it...

Um. Yeeeeaaah. So next month I'll be ready to make some sort of an adapter.
Hoping for some kind of luck.
Still don't know why the optional 40 pin dip header didn't work out with my pentium 4 motherboard.
Nothing but drive not ready. (Lights up drive, makes a noise)
Do I need new firmware or something???
