Potental to use HxC with 26-pin converter as HDD replacement

Post by tsun »

Hi all, I've just picked up a Yamaha C1 music computer that I'd like to use for sequencing applications. Unfortunately, while the floppy drive still works fine, the old 20mb hard drive has long since given up the ghost. I've opened up the system and done a once over on it, and it appears that while the floppy drive interface is thankfully a 34-pin standard interface (and the bios is capable of using a 1.44mb drive, even though the original drive is 720k), the old 3.5" hard drive is on one of those awful 26-pin interfaces. Rather than install an HxC on the secondary floppy bus, and thus be limited to 1.44mb size disks, is it at all possible for me to install it on the 26-pin interface and then use larger drives? Has anyone tried to create drivers to emulate a 20mb MFM/RLL hard disk using the HxC hardware? Or would that require a retooling of the hardware, since it's not intended for files of that size.

Thanks for the help, all.
