The problem is only the ram quantities and/or the SDCard write speed.
There are no major difference on the SDCard write speed between PIC18 & PIC32 : Flash write are slow in any case !

We have already tested a similar solution with a powerful MCU (ARM based LPC2106 MCU @ 64Mhz) some years ago (2007) :
