Post by skideric »

Just wondering if anyone here has used or read reports of this S-video-RCA Composite to VGA LCD Switch Adapter on Ebay?
Seems to be Perfect for Amiga use.Auto sense Pal/NTSC output VGA 800 x 600 & Up. Has Pass thru for PC (VGA IN).Even comes with cables. For LESS than $30. seems would be hard to go wrong!
Any & all thoughts/input appreciated. :)

The Amiga 500 outputs 15-khz RGB via the 23-pin video port, or monochrome via the RCA video out port. Composite is inferior in terms of quality to RGB. For best results, you should convert the RGB output to VGA. I think scandoublers did just that, didn't they?.

The Amiga 500 can output composite color video only through the TV modulator add-on. The Amiga 1200 can output composite video in color, but if you convert that into VGA, you'll get rather poor quality, I think.

An LCD monitor might be able to handle the 15-khz signal from Amiga's video port. You'd certainly get better results by getting an Amiga-VGA adapter or build a such cable yourself.

All THIS i Already know.Been using Amiga since come out.Should have give more details i guess.
I HAVE Amiga-VGA Adapter it is NO GOOD for Standard Modes used by Games/Normal WB. UNLESS u have a HARD To COME BUY Multisync Monitor that will Sync down to 15kz.I had 4 1084/1702/1902A various Monitors.Down to 1 1084 & 1902A(Not Amiga RGB Comp).Three pins are broke on the RGB input/1084.Tried rigging with short pins stuck in female end,but still RED pic.Needs Resoldering new Plug,no easy task, for me anyway. So using Comp in/1084 for CD32(NTSC),A1200-Pal,A500-NTSC.My AOC HD TV/Monitor actually displays Pal from them (Shows "Pal" when Info pressed) BUT only in B&W!.So only the Chroma/Carrier needs correcting. So i SHOULD be able to use other Pal To NTSC on Conv Ebay ! It says NOT for LCD TV's,but i know My LCD will display PAL(Luminance). As for the VGA Adapter, you would be surprised at how far Chipsets for Video have come (Ex: Upscaling DVD to HD) so it might not be so bad.At least it's cheap.

I'm sorry I could not be of help. I'm located in Europe, so my TV's take RGB via Scart. But I prefer to use the Amiga with an older CRT versus my 1080p LCD TV. I have a 26-inch LCD monitor that does work with the Amiga's 15-khz signal using the official Commodore Amiga-VGA adapter.

Ye, you guys in Europe sure got it easy as far as RGB connections goes.Wish USA had adopted SCART or similar hook up.But USA/Americans are hard headed & usually way behind Europe, etc. My 1084 on Comp input still kicks ASS! If i do try one of the solutions mentioned will post back results.

I use a similar S-Video to VGA converter for my A1200 and C64.
What I have found is you need to use a CRT VGA monitor, not an LCD.
The picture on the LCD looks awful, really bad. But on the CRT VGA screen it's pretty good, better than I expected in fact.
This is the one I got:

Thanks Man for the Info! I was thinking it would be pretty bad on the 24 inch LCD.But hey i have a shitload of CRT's up to 19". :D
Don't really intend to use it for my C64's.C64 already got SVHS output,in fact they Invented it i guess! (Chroma/Luma).Made me a cable to go from C64 --> SVHS plug
last year.Get VERY good pic from SVHS. Will pro order the converter ASAP.Funds low ,on unemployment. :(
BTW: May be making a cable to use Apple IIGS RGB Mon on Amiga, yes it will work.
