Akai S1000 not reading disks

Post by emTu »

Hi,

after succecfully installing Hxc readers in a SCI Studio440 and Ensoniq Mirage this week end,
I tried to do so on an Akai S1000 (supposedly the same format as the Akai S01), but
I can't read images.
BTW, my HXC have the resistor mod.

What I have done :
1) format a blank disk while the original floppy in place.
2) RAW read this disk in HXC software.
3) Dump the image on the SD card.
4) Created a blank disk in HXc software following the S01 specs.

Both images do the same :
When booting the sampler, both HXC leds remain lit.
When trying to access the HXC floppy, the S1000 displays 'unknown format trying alternative
density'.
When it gives up, I try to format the disk and it displays 'write protected' even with 'Wr enabled'
set un the HXC menu.

What can be wrong ? A matter of disk format or a bad HXC configuration, wiring ?

Thanks for your support, this device works so great on the other gears !

Just one thing : I tried to format a blank disk on the hxc using the S1000 menu.

It works, but in the end displays : 1640 bad sectors, disc may be unreliable.

Doh ! Future will tell !

mhh no not good : Something is wrong. It looks like that the tracks are too short (bad RPM setting).
You should use the S950 images here as start point:
https://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_driv ... Images.zip

Your image was bad since the beginning (bad setting). How did you create it ?

Hi,

I created the image using the sttings in the Akai S01 topic.

The reason for this is reading this page :
http://mda.smartelectronix.com/akai/akaiinfo.htm#4

I will try the S950 format instead and let you know what it does.

Hi,

formatting is OK with S950 configuration and image files, I'll try to write samples
from my syquest soon.

Here is a picture of the S1000 :

BTW : to replace the drive in a S1000 one have to remove a lot of parts including the front panel.
Thanks.

Yes i know : i have done this operation on 3 S1000HD 2 weeks ago into a Flight simulator company. (i will post pictures & videos soon  )
This was quite long.
(FYI the Airbus A330 / A340 simulators use the Akai S1000 to make the ambiante and cockpit sound into the simulator).

En tout cas merci pour la photo !

Nice story I am a fan of planes too (my cell phone rings/alarm are made out of GPWS recordings),
but tedious job, 3 S1000 in a row !

I still have 2 screws left once my S1000 reassembled but who cares :)

De rien pour la photo.
