Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Hi everyone– I have my brand new Lotharek REV FB - BLACK and I am trying to connect it to my Kaypro 2.... (pictures below)
***** Please accept my apologies in advance as I am completely lacking in all knowledge!
Here’s what I did.
8GB Kingston card, Formatted using FAT32
I took the file https://hxc2001.com/floppy_drive_emulat ... KAY4D1.IMD and loaded it using HxCFloppyEmulator v2.1.4.0 . I then did Save As KAY4D1_IMD.hfe
I ended up with the following on my SD Card:
09/19/2016 09:44 PM 1,004,544 KAY4D1_IMD.hfe
09/19/2016 05:39 PM 8,192 HXCSDFE.CFG
I switched on my Kaypro with the cable connected (no twist) to the HxC.
My CRT says:
* KAYPRO *
Please place your diskette in Drive A
The HxC is powered up correctly and gives me the option to:
Choose a file
"KAY4D1_IMD.hfe"
My HxC beeps when I select but the Kaypro does not boot (or attempt to.)
Clearly I am missing some critical steps!!
Do I need to provide additional termination (resistors)?
Any clues gratefully appreciated
Hailey

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
yeah I did (middle button right?)
Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
.... my HxC does a beep when i press the button, but my Kaypro doesn't respond or boot... (the Kaypro can boot from one of my existing flloppies so I know the Kaypro motherboard works )
Do I need to change the dip switch settings or configure something?

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
how did you connect the drive and what is displayed on the hxc ?
Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
My HxC is connected to the Kaypro by straight ribbon cable (no twist) and it displays "KAY4D1_IMD.hfe T:000/040 S:0"
when I select the file using the middle button (see pic) .... nothing seems to happen on the kaypro (no signing of booting or anything else)
Thoughts?
cheers

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Please set the ID0-A (1) and ID1-B (6) switches to ON.
Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Hi Jeff- thanks for the suggestion. I changed the jumpers but same symptoms (nothing seems to be going on)Jeff wrote:Please set the ID0-A (1) and ID1-B (6) switches to ON.

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
When I run "HxCFloppyEmulator v2.1.4.0" am I supposed to change any of the default settings for KAYPRO?
Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
The double step option may be needed for this machine.
Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
thanks Jeff!
Let me give that a whirl and get back to you

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Hi - I enabled Double Step option in "SD HxC Floppy Emulator Settings" and updated the .cfg file on my SD card.... powered up and selected the image. Still no activity....
Also tried changing various settings in SDCard HxC Floppy Emualtor settings (I dont know what I'm doing )
Auto / Double Step
Emu Shugart
generic Shugart
Mode - From HFE
Mode - Generic Shugart
2 drives emulation (checkeded)
2 drives emulation (unchecked)
Kaypro sits there quietly reminding me to insert a Floppy.... any suggestions?

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Hello... Thought I'd best crack open the box a little further and verify the drives.... are these "Hi-tech" SSDDs Shugart-equivalent?
Model Capacity Size Media Type Height
Hi-Tech 548-25 180K 5.25" Single Sided, Double Density Half
"Hi-Tech Peripherals"
Does it matter to the HxC settings?
H.

Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Have you tried to change the floppy ribbon ?
Re: Kaypro 2 (shugart?) attempted boot
Hi Jeff I am ashamed to confess that I never suspected my 99 cent (including shipping) cable.....Jeff wrote:Have you tried to change the floppy ribbon ?
Let me scavenge one and get back to you!

PS anythoughts on my non-shugart drive? Does it matter or is it like a generic drive?
