No ..
Jeff wrote:I see 18 sectors per track on others track. Is it normal ?
Yes ..
I am sorry .. I thought I was clear about the setup.
The configuration I used (EF_40tkssdd18.fpf) to make the HFE files is included in the zip file previously attached.

The Setting for the Pdrive I used to attempted to format the HFE file is:
NewDos80v2.0 Parms TI=C,TD=E,TC=40,SPT=18,TSR=3,GPL=2,DDSL=17,DDGA=2
This sets 18 Sectors per track ( SPT=18 )

Whats next?

Use a blank image (number of sector set to 0) and reformat it.
Anyway the tracks 1-40 seems to be correctly formatted. (Not sure who has done this : the TRS80 or the HxCFloppyEmulator software ? To be sure please you need to use a blank image).

I included the .fpf file so you could see how the image was created.

Ok ... Now I understand.. Didn't know how you wanted the image created.
Here is an attempt with 40tk, Sectors set to 0
Same error "Unable to format front side of track zero"

Thanks for your help and being patient. I am in the slow reader group!

Thanks. After a closer look to the track, this is probably a write precomp problem. Have you a way to reduce or disable it to confirm this ?
I will remade some test around the write precomp setting.

Jeff,
Yep I kind of though so too .. As I stated in the very first post in this thread
evad wrote: The only difference I can find between the LNW80 and TRS-80 model 1 is that the LNDoubler5/8 forces Write precompensation for all double density tracks.

Per manual...
" Write precompensation is factory aligned to 200 ns +-25ns and is enabled only for double density operation (all tracks 5.25" and tracks above 43 for 8")."
Unfortunately I don't believe that is possible with the LNDoubler5/8 with 5" drives.
However, I will look at making the HXC look like an 8 inch drive to the LNDoubler5/8 and see if I can format the lower 42 tracks..

Jeff,

:D :D :D :D I Believe I have confirmed that it is PreComp :D :D :D :D

I created a Blank image for an 8 Inch drive. 500,000 Bitrate, 360 RPM 40tk Sector=0
Was able to format in double density with no errors.

I created a Blank image for an 8 Inch drive. 500,000 Bitrate, 360 RPM 80tk Sector=0
Was able to format the first 43 tracks before an error occurred "Unable for format front side of track 44"
Apparently precomp really starts at Track44

Attached is the failed 80 track test.

Hi Dave
Any luck getting the LNDoubler to work with the HxC?

Nothing yet..

Just waiting on Jeff for some test code....

Once Jeff gets this issue handled he can add 8" Double Density Drive support to the list. That will be cool :)
I am anxious to be able to backup my 5.25 and 8 inch systems disks.
