Transmit currently navigated directory item via MIDI sysex?

Post by now_its_dark »

Hi there! I wonder if anyone has explored the possibility of this previously, thought it would be worth asking—

I've been thinking about swapping the drive in my Yamaha DSR-1/EMR-1 midi player/recorder for an emulated drive, and thought it would be a nice touch if the navigation of the drive contents could be achieved via the existing 2x20 LCD on the device, leaving the compact / laptop-sized drive slot available for a plain row of buttons.

As with many Yamaha devices, it supports the ability to interpret text data from a midi source, in the form of ascii characters wrapped in a sysex message. It is immediately displayed on the screen when received via the MIDI input. For example, the below says "hello":

F0 43 10 4C 06 00 00 68 65 6C 6C 6F F7

So, if the drive were to report the currently navigated file list item via serial, adding this formatting to that and passing it on at the correct baud rate would be the main requirements in terms of software, I believe?
