Tried a couple of other cables, no luck.

Do you think it would be worth replacing the electrolytic caps on the mainboard?

No.

Try to read/dump one or your Mirage floppy disk with the HxC Floppy Emulator software and export the image to HFE (in shugart interface mode).
After this try to boot from it with the HxC.

Question : Is it a rack or a Keyboard Mirage ?

And this is important too :
Got mine working with an Ensoniq Mirage.

A note you should add to your web site to help other users;

For Ensoniq Mirage, you must install the IDC cable to wrong way round into the HXC2001 SD emulator

Ok, will do - I need to dig out the old PC for that - no disk drive in the current one!

The Mirage is an early model keyboard - metal case, flat buttons. Like this one:

(And actually, looking inside, it's a WD1770 inside this model - I assume that's not a significant difference?)

Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but the drive I'm replacing is an Epson SMD-130; the mainboard on the Mirage also has a tracer that says "cut for SA300 (Shugart)" - it is not cut.

I've tried putting the ribbon cable in the other way around (pin 1 on the left on the HxC) - I originally went with pin 1 on the right as this is what the youtube videos seemed to indicate. In the case of pin 1 on the left, it gets stuck in its boot sequence, does not report "UD", but does not advance the track/sector either. It behaves the same way when I set the jumper to IDE1 instead of IDE0 so I figure this is not correctly identifying the drive at all and is therefore probably the wrong way.

This may relevant... So retry with these images.

Ok, let me try dumping one of my own disks first, then if still no luck I'll make a video.

Ok, dumping the disk and turning it into an image seemed to work no problem.

It still does the same thing though. Here is a short video of it repeatedly trying to load the MASOS 2.0 disk image (from the moment the power is turned on) - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PHY1LAVR

I wonder if the earlier Mirages used a slightly different drive format? Why is there that tracer on the mainboard you're supposed to cut if you're using a Shugart SA300? Maybe I should cut it. It looks like it leads directly to somewhere around pin 15 or 16 of the ribbon connector.

OOOH

I just tried the HxC in an Amiga 500, using some .adf files converted to .hfe

Replacing the Amiga's internal drive - same jumper setting as before; drive A ID0.

And the HxC did the same thing! RA and the light came on, but the track/sector did not advance. The Amiga just sat there on the "insert workbench disk" screen, with the drive light on.

Now, I know that this Amiga is working fine, so maybe there is a problem with this HxC after all?

Ah no, wait.

I had to swap the Amiga ribbon cable at the mainboard end. For some reason it had been put in with both sides backwards.

The HxC is working in the Amiga. Hmm.
